You arrive at your Dart stop early. Only a few riders have arrived. But you know that soon there will be several hundred folks making their way to work. You step to the small concession stand and ask for black coffee. The attendant, a small Hispanic man, draws your drink from the pot, and hands it to you with a small container of creamer. You turn toward the boarding ramp, holding your briefcase between your knees as you carefully open the small paper container of cream with your teeth, while holding the steaming hot coffee with your right hand. Once the cover on the creamer is pulled back by your front teeth, you pour the contents into the cup. Shaking the cup carefully, you mix the black brew and the creamy white creamer. More people are arriving now, the waiting area filling up quickly. As is your way, you scan the faces of the crowd. You have come to understand that there is always the possibility that some person could be in the crowd with “bad intent.” As you scan the crowd, focusing on no one in particular, your gaze falls in a young brown skinned man. There is nothing really out of the ordinary with him, but he seems to be rather nervous. His dark eyes dart, first of all to the rear, then both sides, then down at the tracks where the Dart train will soon be arriving. The recent bombings in Russia briefly come to mind, then as quickly are put away. This is Dallas, Texas. This is one of the most secure places in the country. Or, that is what you have come to believe.

Typical with late March and early April, the Texas wind is whipping up the dust and bits of paper lying on the ground. In fact, you hold the edge of the coffee cup in your teeth as you rebutton your coat. You have recently received you brand new Texas Concealed Handgun License, and you are carrying your Glock 19 safety secured to your waist. Can’t allow the wind to blow your coat back, exposing your weapon.

You glance back at the obviously Middle Eastern looking man, just in time to see a burst of wind whip his long coat open. You deny what you seem to see. Under his coat, strapped around his waist, is a strange looking device. Suddenly you realize that you have seen pictures of this type object. It is a belt that seems to have large “boxes” attached to it. Suddenly, the man looks right into your eyes. You stare back. He knows that you know! Quickly he fumbles for his coat pocket. You know what he is planning! Everything within you screams that this may be your last moment on earth.

What do you do?

Consider the following options. There may be more, but I’m not sure what they might be.

Option 1: You could curl up in a fetal position like a baby, and be blown to bits like the other innocent bystanders. This is a fatalistic tactic, and shows the mark of a person who is totally unprepared for any type situation that may arise that demands a drastic proactive response.

Option 2: You could take off running, your coat tail flying in the breeze. This would be the mark of a coward who has no concern about anyone but himself. I can almost assure you that a person who would do this, especially after going to the trouble to secure a concealed handgun license, has most likely not even cycled the ammunition in his handgun since he qualified on the range. His reason for even getting the CHL may be more for bragging rights than for any real reason. Most likely, he will be hit in the butt by flying chucks of people.

Option 3: This is the one that we all must be prepared to take. Here, you would pull his handgun and place a round hole right between the eyes of the terrorist jerk. You would be a hero because you would have saved the lives of those in the blast zone. However, this option begs the question! How good are you? If placed in this situation, could you hit what you are aiming at, especially when under this type of high stress? If there is any doubt, you owe it to yourself, your family, and your fellow citizens to become that good. I suggest that you check out who in your area offers IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) shooting opportunities. Check out their website. Don’t get caught short.
